Walksafe is a free, volunteer-operated call service that provides accompaniment for individuals who do not wish to walk or take public transportation home alone at night. Throughout the fall and winter semesters, our services are available Sunday through Thursday from 8:00 pm until 12:00 am, and Friday and Saturday from 9:00 pm until 1:00 am. During these operating hours, anyone can receive a walk from one point on the island of Montreal to any other point on the island accessible on foot or by public transportation.

Walksafe volunteers work in teams of two, with every effort made to include at least one female member in each team. These teams are equipped with bright red reflective jackets to make them easily identifiable and carry a radio that keeps them in contact with a dispatcher in our main office at all times during a shift. Anyone who wishes to be accompanied by a Walksafe team simply needs to contact the office by phone during our operating hours, at 514-398-2498. This call is free from any pay phone on campus. When teams are not accompanying someone, they patrol a downtown area bordered by Peel/St. Catherine/St. Laurent/ Ave des Pins, and can be stopped at any time by a passerby for an accompaniment.

Due to the volunteer nature of our service, Walksafe is closed during exam periods and during the summer semester (May-August). During these times, and outside of our normal operating hours during the fall and winter semesters, anyone needing a walk within a short distance from campus should contact McGill Security Services (514-398-3000), again, this call is free from campus phones.

If a club, service, faculty organization or association such as a residence council is operating a special event and would like additional Walksafe coverage, i.e. extra teams or extended operating hours, we are happy to provide this service at no cost, provided we receive at least two weeks advance notice about the location and time of the event and expected number of attendees.
